At the time I evaluated a whole range of possible engines and the Subaru EH72 looked like the best of them. The trouble comes when you need to get parts for such specialised engines. Selecting an engine has to be done with the world market in mind, which means it has to be commonly available, cheap and plentiful. In an aircraft, maintenance cost and reliability are probably the most important factors.

These days I'm leaning towards the Suzuki Mighty Boy F5A 3-cyl 31hp engine. They're strong, reliable and available anywhere. Parts are cheap and most mechanics know how to work on one. And you can get a turbo for them as well. :-)
