Q1_Aircraft: Engine weights was created by Ron
I have been searching for info on engine weights and if they use a
starter? I know that the Onan weight is about 80 pounds, but didnt say
if that is with a starter system? Im looking into engines the weight
about the same as the Onan with a little extra horse power. I know the
1/2 VW might be in that range and would like to know if there is any
better performance in rate of climb? I think that is what is lacking
with the Onan.
Wouldnt mind hearing about people that have flown with the Onan and
thoughts if the performance is acceptible? I have a 20 yera old Onan
that has only 5 hours on it, and it keeps telling me to build a Quikie
for it...

Thanks all, Ron...

Wow, you are correct. I just looked at the wiring diagram for the
onan and it has an alternator but no starter. My plan is to use a
hexadyne p60, it weighs about 98 pounds, with starter, oiltank,
accessories etc. That is why I didn't want to do a vw, I thought it
was getting heavy if you add the alternator etc. I had visions with
my leg over the wing, trying to spin the prop, not a good idea in my
book. I will let you all know how it goes with the engine. I hope to
see it in my workshop in '06.

Hi John...
I have a starter on my onan powered generator in my 5th wheel. I dont know if
the Q1 used a starter or not.
If anybody has the dimensions of the Q1 fire wall, I would appriciate it?
Im sure that my Onan is 18 H.P. and would like ti know what was done to get 22
H.P. I thought it was just shaving the head to get the extra H.P.
Thanks again for all the help.
Ron...
