I believe the Quickie has surface schedule of layups for wing structure with no
shear web, I am not sure about the canard/landing gear wing because I have never
built one. The Q2 had hand layup shear webs. The Q200 has carbon fibre tubular
spar/shear web.
Flutter can happen at 100 mph, so I am one who balances all moveable flight
surfaces. There are lots of different homebuilts that fly fast without balanced
flight surfaces though. I wouldn't try this because you may not get a second
chance !

Hi,

This is my first post to this group even though I?m a member for a
couple of months. I?m considering building a Quickie 1 here in Brazil. I
don?t think there are any flying around here, so I probably will be the
first.
I have a bunch of questions to ask

1. Is it possible to build from scratch? What is needed? I already have
the plans in PDF format and some templates for the full size pieces
2. Does anyone have CAD files for the Quickie templates? I ask because I
have access to CNC cutting equipment.
3. It is possible to install a Rotax engine in place of the ONAN? What
was the weight of the ONAN?
4. How long is the required runway for a safe operation?

Thanks guys

Hi wladimirkummer,

Yes it is possible to build from scratch, that is how all Quickies
are built.
You need the plans which you say you have and some fiberglassing
experience would be nice but you can learn as you go. Since you have
the plans just follow them without making any changes will be your
best and fastest option. If there is anyone in your area that has
built any airplane that requires fiberglassing, try to visit them and
get some advice. Are there any KR2, Variezes, Long Ezes, Cozys in
your area? If so check into it.
You will need some different kinds of foam for your fuselage
structure and wing cores plus some rolls of fiberglass cloth and then
epoxy resin to wet out the fiberglass cloth that will be laid up onto
the foam corse to form the composite sandwhich structure that will
become your Quickie.
The Onan weighs about 80 pounds. Others have used Rotax engines in
Quickies. Typically you just need a cheap hot wire for cutting out
your airfoils. Just read your plans, there should be instructions at
the beginning teaching you how to do and make this tool. I am not
sure a CNC will do you any good except for some of the small metal
parts though, that is depending on the size of the CNC of course.
Good Luck and have fun.
Of course just ask if you have any further questions and someone can
help you.
Larry H.
