Q1_Aircraft: ONAN ENGINE was created by Larry H.
The little one gallon per hour Onan looks pretty good now doesn't it?

Stan; firewall forward without the prop or fiber glass cowls, but with
prop hub and bolts, and all other bits and pieces, it is 80 pounds.

Can someone let me (us) know what an onan weighs?
I'm going up just a bit on compression and putting the 084 on a diet.,

Replied by Larry H. on topic Q1_Aircraft: Re: ONAN ENGINE
John is correct about the 80 lbs on the Onan. Years ago I watched many
of them fly the Q1 around. They seemed to do well. I have one on an
engine stand that I bought from Quickie aircraft when they were still
in business. I paid them, I believe it was $300.00 for the high
compression heads that took the original 18 hp to 22 hp. I never got
the high compression heads from them so that was a wasted $ 300.00.
Gene Shehan was a mechanical type and was familiar with the Onan
engine. It had a really big main bearing where the shaft sticks out of
the case is why he wanted to use this engine, plus it developed it's
horsepower at propeller rpm (in other words just about right rpm for
props). He and Tom Jewett had Burt design an aircraft around the Onan
engine not design an aircraft then find an engine to fit it.
I have seen some 25 hp Honda engines at Northern Hydraulics stores
that are reasonably priced and similar size to the Onan. I do not know
anything about them except they have electric starters, oil filters,
and look ready to go if they turn at the proper rpm and have good main
bearings for crank. Someone should research the Honda industrial
engines that I am talking about.
