Ron:
The older Rotax engines for aviation use are typically a 'provision
4', meaning they have a 4-bolt pattern for a 'A' gearbox and the
newer engines are a 'provision 8' with 8 bolt holes and use a 'B'
gearbox. What you have is probably a snowmobile engine that was
designed to run a clutch/belt drive, therefore there are no gearbox
mount holes. Your only alternative is a belt drive speed reduction
unit and although I'm not intimately familiar with them, the ones
I've shopped use a mounting bracket attached via the engine bolt
holes on the bottom of the case.
I did the same thing. The Rotax 462 is a popular engine in Great
Britain with the hovercraft crowd, so I bought a Rotax snowmobile 462
engine only to discover I couldn't mount a gearbox. Ultimately, since
I didn't need the horsepower of a Rotax for my Quickie, I settled on
a Kawasaki L/C 340 in favor of, hopefully, lower fuel consumption and
longer range. I will be using a 4-belt redrive.
Check with 'Lil Hustler or Vortech (link on this site) for
information on belt redrives. Give me a shout if you have other
questions.
