Q1_Aircraft: Motorcycle engines was created by Ron
Has anyone looked into using a motorcycle engine with a reduction unit
on it? I have a nice Honda 750 4 cylinder that puts out somewhere
around 65 horses.

Thanks for the reply Ryan, Yes, I know most motorcycle engines would require
a reduction unit as the 750 makes it?s HP around 8000. I don?t want to go
with the ? VW, would rather get a newer type 4 valve engine or probably go
with the rotax 503.

Ron,

I think they are good engines but would probally need a reduction unit
for best performance. 1/2 VW's are used direct drive and they are
around 800cc.
High RPM's require a short prop and are noisy.

Replied by Tri-Q1 on topic Q1_Aircraft: Re: Motorcycle engines

Ron,

I was not sugesting anyone should run the 1/2 VW, but that they are
popular. I am just as afraid of a 2 cylinder engine as I am a 2
stroke engine. Have you been to our PHOTOS section ?

Yes Ryan, I have seen the photo?s section and even started a folder of my
own there. On weekends I am pretty busy trying to finish up my Q200 but will
do the patching needed on the little Q along with working on the Q200. In
the meantime I will be searching for the engine. Really didn?t want to go
chopping out the firewall for the Vdub though. In looking at the changing
over to the rotax 503 instructions I found some of the dimensions for the
engine mount don?t jive. But they are close enough it that is the way I
choose to go. Believe it was on the spacing for the engine mounts on the 3
drawings. They don?t match. Wonder if anyone has used the 582 water cooled
rotax? About 3 weeks ago I had a chance to get a whole bunch of VW parts for
free and passed it up. Now they are gone. You can see both my Q?s from the
links at the bottom of this post.

Ryan, Stan Susman here. did you ever get your prop completely developed as to
required RPM ? Reason for question is I'd like to know how much HP you think you
were making at 1st and about what speed you were getting . I now think we will
make 48 hp @ 3500 rpm and may need help on prop cut, again I'm looking for any
empirical data I can find. I have a gear hoop made so as to improve ground
clearance as well as getting wheels off the canard tips.
BTW total investment on the engine thus far is 300.00 but still need carb and
prop flange.
Regards to all, Stan
