Hi Qubies,

I was in Northern Hydraulics store today in Garland Tx. I believe they
have stores in many cities around the US and maybe a website (I have
not checked the web site).
They have a 25 HP Honda with electric start and screw on Oil filter.
It costs somewhere near $ 1,100.00.
They also have a 25 HP Kohler engine that has all the same, elec
start, screw on oil filter. The Kohler was about $ 1,700.00.
Both engines weigh about 100 lbs. The Kohler has a larger crank shaft
sticking out. Both engines look like they have things that can be
taken off for aircraft use. They both have fuel pumps built in and are
ready to install in whatever and fire up with fuel line attached and
battery for starter.
I had a motorhome that had a single cylinder Kohler generator built
in. That was the most reliable engine I have ever seen almost. It
never gave any trouble at all and always started right up when I
needed power.
The Kohlers usually run at low RPMs and develop torque at a low RPM to
be more quiet for generators and such as the Onan does.
The Onan was chosen by Gene Shehan because of the tough bearing at the
shaft outlet, that led Gene Shehan, Tom Jewitt, and Burt Rutan to
believe it to be a really good little engine for the Quickie.
I could not find any information on the RPM range on either engine on
them or in the store catalog. If anyone is interested you can check
and see if there is a website for the store chain, if so then get the
engine model numbers and go directly to Honda or Kohler websites and
see what they say.
The engines are beautifull and are V-Twins which means they are more
narrow than the Onan by a little bit I think but not sure. That Kohler
engine looks like a fantastic aircraft engine to me because of the
large diameter crankshaft, but as I said, I do not know what RPM range
it works in.
Check it if you are still looking for an engine for your plane.

Dave,

Is the crankshaft forged or cast in these engines?

Hi,
I am not sure who Dave is but the cranks do not look cast to me but
surely they are as most cranks are.
