Q1_Aircraft: Gear Driven alternators was created by rebeccaandtad_simpson

My dragonfly has a C90-12F with a generator (gear driven) and I have
been considering going to a Jasco gear driven Alternator (glossy
print says: delivers 14V at 700 RPM). I reallllly struggle parting
with $900 for one with very limited knowledge of them.

Does anyone know of a lower cost reliable gear driven alternator that
would work or could be modified for a c90?
Thanks,
Tad

Delivering 14 volts at 700 RPM is all well and good, but what is
important is how much current (amps) it will deliver at 14 volts at 700
RPM.

John,
It is advertised as 14 V 50 Amp. The distributor says full power at 700 RPMs so
I assume 50.

What about the B&C generator. Many VariEze owners use them and are very happy
with them. Mine has 625 trouble free hours so far.

I was so surprised by your distributor's assertion that I went to the
Jasco web site and looked up the specs. The alternator delivers 50 amps
at 4000 RPM shaft speed, so it will depend on the gear ratio between
your crankshaft and the alternator drive.

I may be wrong here, but I think the usual gear ratio is 2:1. The
alternator starts delivering current at 1000 RPM and at 1400 RPM (700
RPM on the tach) it delivers 15 amps.

Here is a link to the chart;

John,
Thanks for the info and the link. I was emailing Blackwell who has them listed
on ebay. I could not get the links on their web page to work so I email several
questions - One response was full power at 700 rpms so I assumed this was all -
There is definately more data at the link below.
