Q1_Aircraft: Engine profiles and weights

John,

I think what he means is that many engines of similar horsepower with
smaller displacement make their power at higher rpms than can effectively be
used with a direct drive prop. The Rotax 912 makes its 80 horsepower at
5500 rpm, and depends upon a gear reduction drive to deliver that power in a
usable rpm range. But it only has 74 cubic inches. An engine with more
displacment can make that power at a lower rpm.

Ryan; I curious about your comment, 'Keep in mind that an airplane flys
best with large cubic inches not just horsepower.'.

I've never here it before. Could you explain further?

regards, -john-

Dave,

Keep in mind that an airplane flys best with large cubic inches not
just horsepower.

The Onan worked because it is 48 cubic inches. How many cubic inches
do these new engines have?

Replied by davedrosen on topic Q1_Aircraft: Re: Engine profiles and weights

Kerry et al,
For a short prop, like the Q1 needs, around 48' isn't higher RPM is
what's needed to compensate for the short prop. Especially if you
want to get the speed; airframe redline. I believe airframe design
redline is around 147 mph, rumor only. Does anyone know the real
readline?
