Single-rotor wankels have been used on snowmobiles and several
motorcycles (British and German). Theres a large, coffee-table book
Motorcycle Encyclopedia I found at a Borders bookstore with much
useful info. The Hercules motorcycle used an air-cooled rotary, had
38 hp if I recall correctly. Looked like a coffee-can with cooling
fins. Of course RX-7 engines are easy to get, and cheap, but I don't
know if your idea of cutting one down to 1 rotor is feasible - you
would have to add a counterweight to compensate, and of course it
still needs a radiator.
Moller made several high-power, air-cooled rotary engines for their
skycar project, but that's never really gone anywhere past a
prototype, and I don't think the engines are on the market. Good luck
with your project! I do love rotary engines, the concept deserves
more support than its ever recieved...
