Just found a great article on using the 555 timer chip to make your own fuel injection system, including the ability to lean the mixture in cruise. This is similar to the system used by Klaus Savier who is getting 100 mpg at 110 kts at altitude out of a Continental 0-200 powered VariEze. In the 2008 Copperstate Fuel Venture he won with a score of 60.3mpg at 164mph.
