Checking in with HQ

It's always good to hear from you guys. Although it seems like I'm pulling teeth to get anyone to write me these days. This is when many of you take the time to thank me and I do appreciate your words. It helps get the next issue out the door. Here are a few notes I received during the subscription renewal process.

I've enjoyed 50 years of flying with 7 factory planes and two homebuilts. One Q200 we built and one biplane we rebuilt. After 50 years of age, my eyes have taken their toll. Still enjoy Q-Talk.

There is not much going on here in Sioux Falls, SD. It's very cold now, so I don't even go out to the airport. I haven't gotten to fly it for so long now. I'm still trying to get my medical but it doesn't look good.

I put my Q2 on EBAY, but didn't even get a bid. There has been some interest in it but so far no takers. I think winter time is not a good time to sell when you live where it is so cold.

Thank you! Jerry Kennedy Sioux Falls, SD

Its been a very quiet year for flying. In fact so much so I sold my Cessna 170. I will miss it. The Quickie didn't see much flying this year either. Now with one plane to worry about, and a new year upon us, I'm optimistic about putting some hours on N494K.

Thanks for a great newsletter & good luck in 2008.

Keith Welsh Marshall, IL

Here is my renewal. I look forward to every issue. My project is in the engine installation stage. I built a hangar and have been working on my driveway/ runway. Looking forward to continuing the work this spring. Also looking forward to Sun 'n Fun.

Tom Dunn Lake Placid, FL

Sincere thanks for another year of hugely useful newsletters! Your leadership really helps our community. Stay bolted together.

Jim Porter Madison, AL

I have just purchased Dave Carlson's Q2 and am working on getting it back to flying condition. It has been in his garage for the last 4 or 5 years disassembled. I'm looking forward to getting it back in the air.

Kelly Kelly Roundup, MT

My Q2 hasn't been touched for nearly 4 years now. I'm hoping that "this is the year" I'll complete it. Various things have changed in my life (lost a job, opened a speed shop, closed a speed shop!, got another job, got married, had a baby, etc.), but things are starting to stabilize. I'll send you some pictures now that it's officially an active project again.

I had a couple of years where I didn't subscribe. Basically, I didn't have 2 pennies to rub together. Then I finally subscribed again in 2007. I just purchased the back issues for 2005 thru 2006 in the PDF format. I had no idea what I was missing by having the B/W newsletter mailed to me rather than the email/PDF version in color! In retrospect, I wish I had opted for the PDF version in

2007 rather than the hard copies. You're doing a fantastic job. It's amazing what all I've missed out on by missing the newsletter for a couple of years.

Chris Adkins Ashland, KY

I am just about finished with my engine. I have to decide if I want to go EFI or carburetor. As soon as I am finished with the engine I will hang it on the Q2, I have made the tail wheel changes. I have also installed dual brakes. My reflexor seems to be working fine. I still haven't decided on whether to install an air brake or not. The control panel is half done and I am starting to wire it up.

Happy New Year.

Raoul Borgonetti Beverly Hills, FL

After a building experience that started in January of 1981, N181MB flew to Sun 'n Fun and was awarded one of the Outstanding Experimental Awards in 1992. I was never happy with the RevMaster engine, so I converted to the Subaru EA-81 truck engine. This took another two years to get most of the bugs out. I never felt comfortable with this installation either. The 0-200 would have been a much wiser choice. At age 73, getting into and out of the Q2 was becoming more and more of a problem, so I reluctantly decided to sell the aircraft. It was disassembled and sold as parts to a buyer in Singapore.

I have a number of items and parts that other builders might be interested in buying. (I have placed these in the Classified Section on page 11)

I have enclosed a couple of photos of how she once looked.

Marion Brown Plantation, FL

Well, as all of us in the mid-west know, winter has slowed us down. I have not flown the Tri-Q for a while now, but I am looking forward to spring. I have 33 hours on it now and have started load testing. I was up to 100 Lbs. in the right seat when winter hit. It looks like changing the wing incidence by two degrees and reworking the control system has really paid off. It is flying great with no need for the reflexor on take off or landing and pitch control is great. There is a lot of opinion on the angle of incidence for the canard on these airplanes . I am beginning to think it may have something to do with the that big gear hanging down in the wind causing drag on these Tri-Q's. But you know what the say about opinions. I can only tell you what has worked for me.

Bob Clark Ankeny, IA

Reg Clarke had a hard landing at a way point on his way to AirVenture last year which damaged his canard and prop. Photos of the damage are in Q-Talk Issue 125, page 10. He sent me this note and these photos.

I have done the repair to my Q canard and I am back in the air. I got help from reviewing past posts to the Q-List and made several phone calls to Jim Patillo. Jim's help was greatly appreciated. I still need to paint the repair. It flies the same as it did before. I am considering some speed mods to the airframe to get ready

for the AirVenture cup race. I haven't flown much lately because of the weather up here.

Reg Clarke

Q2/Subaru - Lethbridge, Alberta

Then I got a subscription from a familiar name. We exchanged the following emails.

Hi Kimbull! I noticed you have not subscribed for several years. If I remember correctly, you rebuilt your canard and put Dragonfly MKII style landing gear on it. Also, don't you fly behind an O-235??? I guess I would like you to just bring me up to speed on what you and your airplane have been up to.

Good to hear from you, Doug. You do have the details correct about my plane. Unfortunately I had a landing gear failure in 1998 that damaged the bottom of the plane. I designed a new landing gear, installed a motorized trim tab, and made a few other minor changes. I was just getting the plane back into flying condition when I went through a divorce, so things strengthening it yet, as I just haven't had the motivation to do so. I am hoping to get to it soon. I have been thinking about selling the plane as well, but have not made up my mind yet. I thought by re-subscribing, it might re-kindle my interest, so we will see....

I don't have any recent photos, but have attached a couple of my favorite pictures for you interest.

Kimbull McAndrew DeWinton, Alberta

WARNING!

The photos on the following page are not for the faint of heart...

Sam Hoskins is at it again! Trying to squeeze out another mile per hour from his Q200. He sent me these photos.

There are guys out there that have no fear when it comes to their building skills. I am not one of them. Good Luck Sam!
