Has anyone considered the BMW motorcycle engines? (Like the
R1100?) I'm still looking for viable alternatives...

How much power do these planes really need to fly well, anyways?
Ryan really liked his VW on there - especially as compared to the
Onan, but said that it didn't give him that much more top speed -
just much better climb (if I understood him correctly). Maybe 18hp
isn't really enough - but is 60 overkill? Seems to me something in
the 35 hp range would be RIGHT about where you wanted to be...
(enough cruise, climb, and economy to really make you enjoy all
three!)

It seems to me that the full 4 cylinder VW is a bit too much.
Heavy, maybe more power than REALLY needed. But it does carry all
the accessories... Starter and alternator would be nice - you could
run lights and radios, too

The P-60 seems like a hell of a motor, but at 9K it's a bit steep.
Otherwise gorgeous setup. Too much power?

The McCulloch 0-100 is intriguing - but it's a two stroke and there
are VERY few aircraft (outside of gyrocopters) that use these at
all. (in fact - I can only find reference to a grand total of three -
a Hummelbird, a Flying Flea, and a BD-5) A lot of people don't like
them (for a wide variety of reasons) - but it's hard to argue the
power to weight ratio...

HKS - expensive. Otherwise pretty - much like the P-60.

Ultravair very tempting. Great manual, pretty build. Seems to me
like this might be the right place to be... But you have to build
it, and that's gonna take a little time and some scrounging (too
bad - great winter project, eh?)

I think i'm gonna try and put together a little spread sheet - I'll
post it when I'm done. We can (collectively) edit and/or add to it
as desired - maybe it'll give us a better idea of what's open to us
as options...

Jonathon,

I, for one, have decided on the 32hp half vw. Same weight as
the Onan, and 50% more hp.

I have not finished my Dragonfly yet, but expect to within the next two
months, then maybe onto the Q1.

We've put out several articles over the past few years, keeping the Q-1 in
mind. The Hexadyne P-60 (as you mentioned) is pretty pricy, but it's a very
compact (and complete) package and physically fits the Q nicely. We have
briefly mentioned the Q installation (with a photo or two) in the article.
We featured the P-60 in issue #81, and we will have a P-60 forum at the
Mountain State Canard Fly-in, the weekend of April 28.

Patrick,

Wow!

Talk about irony - I just found your web-site last night, and printed your info
with the intent of calling you guys this week and ordering the whole shooting
match!!!!

Clearly I need to spend the dollars - can't wait to see what other gems might be
hidden in there...

Best regards,

Jonathan

Thanks Ryan,

I can appreciate that, too - I'm not anxious to be putting my airplane down
anywhere other than the place I MEANT to be putting it down when I took off -
reliability DOES mean a lot to me.

I stumbled across this site - maybe this'll be of interest to a couple of you.

www.geocities.com/cgifly2/index.html

I know a couple of people were looking at the Ultravair, too - has anyone
actually put one together and flown with it? The manual is well done - and the
project seems eminently doable for anyone who can build an aircraft...

Now I'm gonna have to go check out that BMW site.

Jonathan

(Im REALLY pleased to see that you're still here on the board Ryan!! Wasn't
sure how much you might still be around - you're a wealth of info - would HATE
to lose you!)

It is not just power you get with the full VW, it is reliability.
