Issue 168

Hey Member,
Happy New Year! I trust you enjoyed the Holiday Season. As I've mentioned in the last few newsletters, this will be the last issue of Q-talk, ending a 32 year run of continuous publication. However, there is still much to do for the Quickie community . . . and I intend to use the "extra" time to complete a few projects I've been meaning to tackle.

New Year's Resolutions

First, you'll notice that Sam and I finished the "Better LS1 Instructions" and you can find them at the link below. Sam also took great notes while completing his wheel alignment, and these are included in this issue as well. Together, these created a 94 page MS Word document! So please look through the text and pictures and see if there is anything that should be corrected. (I would especially appreciate feedback from people who have actually constructed an LS1 Canard!) ;-)

As I've mentioned in previous newsletters, I am also working on dimensional drawings for all of the Q1 metal parts . . . and I will send another email to everyone as soon as those are completed. I should also have the upholstery drawings for the Q2 and Q-200 completed shortly.

So without further ado and fanfare . . . I would like to send a big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed something to the newsletter over the last five years that I have been editor. I simply could not have done it without you. Going forward, if you have something to share, please continue to send me text and photos and I will post them on the website for you. I look forward to working with all (and seeing many) of you in 2015 and beyond!

If you have any questions, please reply to this e-mail, and I will do my best to answer them. In the meantime enjoy this issue.

Again, THANKS and Happy New Year!

Warm regards,
Dan Yager

Better LS1 Instructions

We combined text from the original QAC instructions, Q2 plans, and notes from Sam's recent rebuild to come up with greatly improved instructions for building the Q-200 LS(1) 0417 MOD Airfoil Canard with Carbon Fiber Spar. Please have a look and let me know if anything needs to be tweaked.

Wheel Alignment 101

Sam also took great notes while performing the "David Gall Wheel Alignment" when the canard is still attached to your workbench. This is arguably one of the most important things you can do to improve the ground handling of your taildragger, and is a major tenet of the "Jim-Bob Six-Pack" of safety mods.

Issue 167

Hey Member,
This newsletter is a few days late. My wife and I just returned from a trip to Ireland, and I am starting to get caught up now. The good news is that she’s feeling well enough to travel again, so maybe you’ll see more of me in the coming years!

Beware of Bull!

Speaking of seeing everyone . . . It was fun to see the usual suspects (and several new faces) at this year’s Field of Dreams in Orange, MA. It’s always great to see old friends and make new ones, but it’s even better to see the community growing and thriving. (Check out Jim Masal’s write up below.)

In the last few issues, I have mentioned that this newsletter (at least in its current form and frequency) will be going away in January 2015. However, just to clarify, I want to use the “spare time” created by this change to keep the website going, make improvements to how we interact with each other, and increase the amount of information and materials available to people interested in building and flying Quickies. In addition, I would like to spend more time writing articles for magazines and other experimental aircraft outlets, to increase interest in the designs.

In the future, your $20 annual QBA membership will grant you access to the entire newsletter archive, and any new tools we develop. I envision the site being more "social," with easy methods to share videos, pictures, and text instantaneously! I am envisioning the Q-list on steroids, and I invite your suggestions!

Since the last issue, I have found a new host for the website, and I have begun updating much of the software running behind the scenes. (Did you notice the color change from red to blue?) Thanks to Jeff LeTempt, I also uploaded the entire Dragonfly Newsletter Archive and made it available for FREE! I am also still actively working on documenting the metal parts for the Q1 provided by Wayne Bressler, and working with Sam Hoskins to improve the LS1 Canard instructions.

If you have any questions, please reply to this e-mail, and I will do my best to answer them. In the meantime enjoy this issue.

Remember, "Together we build better planes," and newsletters!
But . . . It certainly takes a village!

Warm regards,

Q-talk Newsletter

Issue 165

Hey Member,
Lately there has been a dramatic drop-off in the number of submissions to the newsletter. This has led me to the conclusion that perhaps a "newsletter" (and its bi-monthly frequency) have become a little outdated, especially since the "News" is usually stale by the time you hear it from me. In an era of instant communications, it seems a little silly to have to wait 2 months to hear about someone's first flight, or progress made on a build.

Better and Faster?

To make a long story short, I think it's high time for me to wrap up the newsletter (in its current form) and use the time I gain to create better online communication tools for us to share ideas! I fully intend to keep the website going, and I would like to find some programming partners to make it even better.

In addition, I will continue archiving information as I receive it, and using my drafting skills to draw any of the pieces that are still missing.

I expect the last issue of Q-talk to be the December 2014 issue. (That will make a continuous run of 32 years!)

Issue 166

Hey Member,
In the last issue I mentioned that Q-talk (at least in its current form and frequency) will be going away in January 2015. With that being said I still have two major projects going on that are Q related!

Mad Scientist

The first project is a rewrite of the Q-200 LS1 Construction plans. Sam Hoskins took very good notes (and photos) during the rebuild of his LS1 canard, and I am diligently incorporating his notes into our first draft. I will send that back to Sam for revisions soon, and we hope to have a finished product to bring to FOD this year. (Just a few short weeks away.)

The second big project is documentation of all of the Q1's metal parts. Wayne Bressler was kind enough to ship all of his Q1 kit parts to me, and I have been chipping away at their documentation ever since. When completed, I'm sure FLAPS will be interested in having a set of the Solid Works drawings to supply parts to the community.

In addition, I am actively testing some software upgrades and actively seeking better web hosting. I hope to have a new and improved version of the QBA website up and running (including the return of the forum) in the first Quarter of 2015 . . . So stay tuned.

In the future, your $20 annual QBA membership will grant you access to the entire newsletter archive, and any new tools we develop. Hey Member,
This issue is being sent a few days late because I am just now starting to recover from a bad bout with the flu. I've heard people say that they "had a touch of the flu." For me it felt that "touch" involved being beaten with a baseball bat, and left for dead in some remote alley. Not fun!

A Touch of the Flu?

At any rate . . . and without further ado . . . Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this fine issue . . . as always . . . I simply couldn't keep this going without you!

I still look forward to hearing from each and every one of you, and I'm eager to hear what you've all been up to! So drop me a line any way you can get it to me! Spring has officially sprung in the Northern Hemisphere, so that means that lots of Q related events and activities should be ramping up as well. Please take a moment to let us all know what you've been up to . . . or what you're planning on being up to.
