Q-talk 99 - 13th Annual Tandem Wing Field of Dreams Fly-In

Well guys, we are getting closer to the big event. Of course 1 am talking about the 13th Annual Tandem Wing Field of Dreams Fly-In. Everything is on track for the October 3-5 event at Sullivan, MO (KUUV). All of the big moving pieces and parts are in stone, but as with most functions like this, there are several little things that still need to be ironed out.

In addition to the planning group that I set-up on Yahoo Groups at http: //groups.yahoo.com/group/TandemWingFlyIn/, I have also created an event web site at http: //www.fidnet.com/~letempt/. This web site includes detailed information on the hotels, driving directions, local attractions and a wide variety of general information. The nice thing about the web site is your registration and banquet fees can be paid using PayPal or your credit card.

Speaking of hotels, I was able to secure a reduced rate at 4 of the 5 hotels in Sullivan. If you did not already know this, they are all within about 1 mile of the airport!! The awards banquet is going to be held at the Sullivan Community Events Center and the dinner is going to be catered by Missouri Hick BBQ. Come hungry because I have been promised this will be quite a meal for not a lot of money.

Since I brought it up, money that is, let me talk briefly about what I have in mind. Right now it looks like I should be able to reduce the event costs for each participant. If not, a worse case scenario would be the same cost as last year. As a way of saying THANK YOU to anyone who flies in their tandem wing airplane, FREE hangar space will be available and the pilot will NOT have to pay any registration fees. You will just have to pay for the awards banquet dinner.

What does your registration fee cover? The registration fee will pay for all of the administrative costs and the awards. There will be awards presented for the high time airplane, best interior, longest distance flown to the event, and best overall aircraft (one for the Dragonflys and one for the Q birds, a total of 8 awards).

Joe Anthony is going to head up the aircraft judging committee and I am sure he will be looking for a few volunteers to help out. In previous years the Q guys helped judge the Dragonflys and the Dragonfly guys helped judge the Q's.

Allan Thayer will be the performance run coordinator, to be conducted first thing in the morning to avoid the typical afternoon turbulence.

I will probably need a little help during the event and I would like to thank everyone in advance for lending a hand. If you are interested in the job of video taping the fly-in, please contact me ASAP as I will not be assuming those duties this year.

If you have any suggestions, please feel free to email or call me. My email address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and my phone number is (573) 364-2545. We may have as many as 20, or more, tandem wing planes in attendance. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the fly-in!!!
